How to Buy a Used Car or Suv

Posted on January 31st, 2010 by T Walker  |  No Comments »

imageThere are steps you need to take if you want to buy a used car or SUV. You cannot just go to a dealer and decide right away on used cars and trucks. You need to take these steps to remove some inherent risks in buying used cars and in negotiating used car prices.

Tip #1: Do your work

You need to be prepared once you step into a used car lot. Read consumer reports and reviews. Compare prices and gas consumption data on used cars. There are several websites on used car reviews and used car prices comparisons. These sites will often help you locate used cars in your area too.

When you get online, take note of used car prices, reliability ratings, and maintenance cost. This will help you budget how much you need to buy the used cars you want, and how much you’ll need each year for their upkeep. When you’ve done your research, narrow down your used car choices to just one or two models. This will make your actual search easier. You will also be able to test more effectively if you have fewer models to compare, such as used cars Toronto, used cars Montreal, and used cars Vancouver.

Tip #2: Check your used car’s history

When you have pinpointed the used car that you want and the reasonable used car prices for this, it’s time to check on what’s available. There are online sites you can use to quicken your search on

used car prices, or you can scout your local “used car (auto hebdo)” dealers. Once you’ve narrowed down your choices, know their history. Tick off used cars that have been used heavily, those used cars that have been restored after an accident, or those used cars with rolled back odometers.

Tip #3: Check and test drive

Don’t just believe what your dealer tells you on used cars and used car prices. You’ve done your own research. Now you have to find out for yourself. Inspect the car thoroughly. If you can, bring a mechanic or bring the car to a mechanic so he can give you an unbiased assessment. Once this is done and you’re satisfied, test-drive the used car. Never give a deposit on used car prices or sign a contract without inspecting and test-driving first.

Tip #4: Check the fine print

Some people have the tendency to forget about the paperwork on used cars once a deal has been reached. Paperwork is not all about dotting the I’s. The contract is there so you are protected. Check and make sure that there are no registered liens against the used car. Check also that the signatory for the Bill of Sale is also the actual owner of the car. If you can, check with the Vehicle Registration Authorities to see if your car has not been stolen.
